Fundraise Up / 2022–2023
Making donation fee coverage clearer
Fundraise Up is a US-based platform for online donations. Processing fees reduce what nonprofits receive. I worked on how checkout asks donors to cover those costs while keeping the donation total understandable.
Reported outcomes and design scope. Measurement details are noted below.
My contribution
I reviewed other donation flows and designed the fee explanation, amount display and confirmation feedback across all three settings. The product, design and engineering team evaluated the interaction through A/B testing.
Key decision
I kept the donation amount prominent and put the fee breakdown behind an information control. This required one extra step to inspect the calculation, but avoided making every donor read it before completing checkout.
Outcome
A/B testing reported +1.67% fee-coverage conversion and 8% fewer opt-outs when coverage was selected by default.
Constraints behind the design
Nonprofits needed three settings: coverage off, selected by default or required. Each had to make the total understandable while keeping the donation itself front and center.
Explain the cost without burying the donation
Payment and service costs reduce what a nonprofit receives. The interface needed to explain that clearly, show the total and let donors finish giving without turning checkout into a calculation exercise.
Make the fee and the donor’s choice understandable
I reviewed how other donation flows explained costs and let donors change their choice. The design needed to support an unselected option, a default-selected option and required coverage—not treat every nonprofit’s policy as the same.
One component for three nonprofit settings
Nonprofits could leave coverage off, select it by default or require it. A short invitation explained the optional choice, with fee details available on demand. The selected state acknowledged the contribution without interrupting checkout.
Confirming fee coverage without another step
A brief animation confirmed the donor’s choice. It added feedback without another screen or step, while the donation amount remained the most important information on the page.
What changed
These figures come from the project summary. The baseline, measurement period and distinction between relative percentages and percentage points are not available here. Opt-outs refer to the setting selected by default.
